Work Experience

Attention: open in a new window. PDFPrintE-mail

We are able to offer very limited opportunities for work experience.  If you are over 16 and interested in work experience at the Harris Museum, please write to us at least six months in advance of when you would like your placement to begin, providing details of what type of work you are interested in and your career aspirations.  We will do our best to help but please bear in mind that we receive far more applications for work experience than we are able to fulfil.

How can I find out about working in museums?
The best place to obtain information about careers in museums and galleries is from the Museums Association. This is the professional body for museum staff which also publishes the monthly Museums Journal and Recruitment Supplements in which many jobs are advertised. You do not need to be working in a museum already to join the Association.

The MA also produces a number of publications including the Museums Yearbook which you can find in most libraries and which gives the names and addresses of most museums in Britain.

Associate membership of the MA is open to people working in museums who have completed an appropriate amount of Continuing Professional Development. Routes to Associate membership vary according to qualifications and experience and you can get details from the MA.
