Visions of an Industrial Age

Visions of an Industrial Age featured a unique series of images of Preston captured on camera in the 1850s, taken only 70 years after the first cotton mill was built.


The exhibition offered visitors a rare glimpse of a medieval market town that was undergoing a radical transformation. The photographs reproduced in the exhibition are the oldest known photographs of Preston and were purchased by the museum in 1978 with the assistance of a 50% grant from the V&A Purchase Grant Fund. www.vam.ac.uk
