Enchanted Worlds: Art of Fairy Stories and Mermaid Tales

13 June – 5 September 2009

Capturing the imagination of adults and children alike, Enchanted Worlds was a visual treat of painting, sculpture, animation, puppetry and illustration, as well as historic childrens’ book from the Harris Library.  Dating from the 1780s to the present day, you could see important artworks, some loaned from galleries such as the Tate and the V&A, alongside work from the Harris’ own collection.

Visions of an Industrial Age

Visions of an Industrial Age featured a unique series of images of Preston captured on camera in the 1850s, taken only 70 years after the first cotton mill was built.

A taste of Italy came to the Harris with this elegant exhibition featuring leading British landscape artists from the 19th and early 20th centuries, which took you on a journey from the tranquil canals of Venice to Sicily's smouldering Mount Etna.
