On this tour you'll get an insight into the meanings and stories behind each piece as well as an understanding of some of the cutting edge techniques used by over 20 young artists in the show.

 

Garth Gratrix is an artist and curator and has exhibited work across the country. Garth will be giving attendees of this tour an insight into the stunning pieces.

GRAFT has been developed by artist and curator Garth Gratrix in collaboration with UKYA and The Harris as a legacy of the Citywide Takeover: Nottingham. Providing a group of artists with a paid exhibition opportunity as chosen during a site visit whereby both organisations and young people from Preston selected 20 artists.

Harris Museum, Art Gallery & Library and UK Young Artists are funded by Arts Council England's National Portfolio Programme.

Kerry Tenbey
Assistant Curator- G R A F T
Curatorial Assistant- @hanoverproject
Kerry Tenbey is a North West based Sculptor and Visual Artist, currently studying Fine Art at The University of Central Lancashire. She experiments with a wide variety of materials and processes to produce 3D composition which invites the audience to consider and question what it means to be 'Human'. Her work explores concepts of identity, sexuality and Gender.

Beth Wise
3rd Year BA Fine Art student - UCLan
Curatorial Assistant for @hanoverproject
Wise's work primarily revolves around the way we communicate ideas and how this can be illustrated through sculptural work and who is inspired by the library and concrete poetry. Her work uses a variety of different materials to create sculptural objects. The library as a location for ideas and knowledge is central to the research of her practice. Her work is achieved through material experiments, textiles and costing processes.

Rory Strudwick
Strudwick is a recent graduate from the Glasgow School of Art in textiles print. His work specialises in colour theory which he explores through print, photography, painting and Photoshop. Rory's work is driven by his fascination with how colours interact and play with one and other which he explores through his textiles as various colour studies.

Daisy James
Articulating visually, verbally and through crafted prose, Daisy demonstrates an interest for people and why they do the things they do. In her work, she defines and communicates the insights afforded by research, developing her sense of how to handle the complex challenges presented by human-centred design. Taking responsibility for the needs of people, Daisy explores the potential of speaking and listening; establishing that this inspires change.

Grace Stones
Originally from Wolverhampton Grace graduated in Fine Art at Loughborough University in 2018. She specialises in contemporary drawing, looking particularly at endurance, the process of drawing and mental health coping mechanisms. Her work is directly related to the site in which it is made, and is comprised of one intrusive thought written over and over again until it is no longer recognisable.

Emily Stollery
Stollery is a Nottingham based sculptural artist who's practice is led by the seductive properties of materials. She is Interested in relationships between material forms and functions and human perception of material capabilities. Her work challenges our pre-conceived ideas of specific materials, commonly found in our everyday existence, and questioning their uses.Artist statement. Led by the seductive properties of materials, process and assemblage then run in parallel in order for the work to emerge somewhere inbetween. Materials meet instinct to create forms born out of spontaneity; the in the moment to and fro of maker and material.

Lorenza Demata
It is estimated that expatriates constitute approxiamately 40% of London population. At the same time, almost 50% of the total consumption of food resourcesrelies on the importation of fruit and vegetables in other countries.  Lorenza aims to unveil the process of redefining individual identity that often takes place in the experience of expatriates.

George Chinnery Derby, UK.
Artist/ Designer/ Agricultural Engineer - Chinnery's interdisciplinary practice skirts the peripheries of art, poetry, design and craft; a playful apparatus to explore the basic poetic urge of placing one thing next to another, in fertile proximity. George graduated from Fine Art at Falmouth University in 2013 with a practise based in the Midlands. 'Remains of the Paper Mill' is a digitally fabricated artefact. It functions as a fictionalised remnant of an apparently unpublicised and unattended occurrence in a snowy field, in Leicestershire.

Habib Hajallie
Although Born in Southeast London Hajallie's Sierra Leonean and Lebanese heritage usually feeds directly into his practice. He ooks to convey a sense of empowerment to often marginalised ethnic groups in the western world, through the exploration of cultural identity. Hajallie seeks to create a discourse regarding society's perception of people to be of varying humanistic value. With the disenfranchised often being undermined by the mainstream media; which somewhat paradoxically reflects a hierarchy of status similar to colonial ideals in reference to the transatlantic slave trade.His work is achieved by using antique texts and maps as canvases. Then he employs a process of drawing using traditional methods of draughtsmanship, celebrating authentic drawing techniques in a digital age.

Hannah Parikh
Hannah Parikh is a visual artist based in Nottingham, specialising in sculpture and installation. She encompasses a range of techniques in her practice such as casting, ceramics and mould making. Parikh combines found materials with casts of domestic objects to transform spaces, influenced by scenes of everyday life and human presence.

Jodie Wingham
Jodie Wingham combines printmaking with non traditional methods of display to create artworks that playfully distort images. - Unbuttoned, a large scale screen print on aluminium depicts a man's shirt with a button undone revealing a black crevice where skin is known to be but instead hidden in the darkness. Themes surrounding the pleasure taken by human beings in the act of 'looking' have continually underpinned Jodie's practice -with Unbuttoned the audience engage with an image both visually and physically.An unconventional printmaker, her work involves the manipulation of print with non traditional methods of display to create artworks that playfully distort images. Inspired by the act of observing others and the audiences' enjoyment of this process she focuses on the viewers desire to look and gain information, using imagery with voyeuristic tendencies. Since graduating from BCU in 2016 with a Masters in Fine Art, her work has been selected for shows across the UK.

Juliet E P Gibbs
Gibbs was born in Somerset and just completed a Fine Art BA Hons degree at Falmouth University.
A plant grows out of nothing. A window floats in space. An architectural line cuts unevenly across a canvas. Pipes, handrails, ceilings. Man-made elements spill into artificial jungles. Perfectly curated tropical gardens; glasshouses hold an aura of mystery in their misty, dense and often humid atmospheres. The deconstructed, reimagined environments of exotic lands contained in microcosmic glasshouses built in England make up the subject for this series of paintings, inspired by the brutalist architecture of the Barbican conservatory in London.

Megan Visser
Visser is a multi-disciplinary artist that lives and works in London and graduated from UAL Wimbledon College of Arts. Her practice explores themes of gender and commodity in an increasingly digital society. Through acts of camp beautification, she manifests ambiguous male/female 'characters' in order to explore the politicized readings of the ways in which we, as humans, exert our attentions to selfhood.

Morgan Dowdall
Cardiff based, Dowdall is an artist specialised in ceramics. His work explores notions of intimacy through the male body and aims to subvert the tradition of the female form being used as both subject and object. All of his work is infused with a queer sensibility, that can at times be both cutting-edge but also references the historic and well-known.He is interested in the material qualities of clay as a medium and how it has the ability to gather trace evidence from skin, fingerprints, hairs, dust etc. The clays used range from white earthenware, terracotta, porcelain and earthenware slips.

Herfa Thompson graduated from The Glasgow school of Art in 2017, and is a multi-disciplinary artist, working primarily in drawing, print-making and performance. Her work explores human relationships, communities, rituals and emotions and the environments around us. London Fields Lido (Les Anses D'Arlet) is the first in an ongoing series of acrylic and watercolour paintings on canvas exploring wild swimming in Britain with memories of swimming in Martinique and Zambia. Inspired by real events, London Fields Lido explores the relaxed human interactions noted in on a summer's evening and the artist's own desire to express deep tenderness to an unrequited love despite all the warning signs.

Kelly Fung graduated from Fine Art at the School of Art Institute of Chicago, 2015, recently received MA from Royal College of Art, London. Originally from China, Kelly is an interdisciplinary maker. She works with materials, objects, images and installation to reconstruct fragmented memory. Kelly aims to create an ongoing space, she calls it home: an extension of self and imagination, which allows audiences to speak to and from their collective memory. 'currently nowhere (now here)'- is an installation contains objects I created from found/broken objects and mixed materials. This work is inspired by memories from the old house of my childhood and my current surrounding.

Zala Zagoršek
Zala Zagoršek is glass artist from Slovenia. In glass she is trying to capture moments and sentiments, translate it into material, and give an observer feeling of safety, silence and softness.

Micky Dickson is a graduate of Fine Art from Nottingham Trent University (2017). Micky is now a practicing artist specialising in concept driven installation, sculpture and textile based work. Led by experiences of ill-health, the work has now evolved to take form of an investigation into interiors, biological and domestic, re-appropriating patterns found in medical biology.

Ryan Heath
Heath is a UK based artist and co-founder of arts project space Chaos Magic. Ryan is a member of BACKLIT studios, his work explored mark making and manipulation, in the material and simulated sense. He revives lost and hidden residual markings from his external environment and reinvents their purpose or meaning through graphical painting. The visuals in his current series of standing paintings come from unassuming places with his passage through the city in common. Some examples of these may be dry adhesive marks; gradients from the graphics of a local business or elements borrowed from forgotten & defunct signage. The process is a sort of auditioning – bringing forms, materials and subjects together – they act as a map-like image, hopefully showing the physical footprint of place through playful mark-making and composition.

Sam Baker
By deliberately twisting, bending and pinching linear forms Baker creates a new physical act of communication. The works stand as sites of a past performance where Baker has laboriously cut into materials creating conversation about production, finesse and technical virtuosity. The introduction of steam is an activator that playfully turns a process into a material within itself, by rupturing the binary relationships of wood and steel.

Tiffany Slowik
Tiffany Slowik is an artist whose work spreads across sculpture, sound, and installation. Regarded as a maker of 'things' she appropriates and collects objects to form beings of their own. They live in humorous and colourful installations the artist creates. These uncanny sculptural pieces, and the environments made to contain them, attempt to reflect abstractly the absurdity of routine and false needs implicated by a consumerist and materialistic society.

Jake Walker
Jake Walker makes work in a number of ways including, drawing, performance, sculptural installation and computer programming and includes language and translation, using chance operations to make decisions with the use of computing, dance and sport.

Isobel Adderley
The flicker between two states is important to Isobel Adderley in many areas of her practice. She is interested by words which mean different things; erratic – a movement or behaviour and a glacially moved rock in a landscape. Words which when said could be mistaken for different meanings, tail – belonging to an animal or instead a story.

Tate n Lyle (Paul Hughes and Rohanne Udall)
Tate n Lyle is the collaboration of Rohanne Udall (b. 1990, MRes Art: Theory and Philosophy) and Paul Hughes (b. 1991, University of Roehampton, MA Dance Studies). Trained in fine art, philosophy, and dance, they undertake artistic, performance and curatorial projects. Their work has received support from institutions across dance, performance and visual arts, including David Roberts Art Foundation, Hospitalfield Arts, Dance4, PACT Zollverein, Rich Mix and DISKURS festival. Rohanne lives in London and Paul in Nottingham.
