Floral Fashions: A Close-Up Look at our Blooming Best Textiles

Fashion textile with flower motifs

Wednesday 11 July

Session One:  5:30pm - 6:30pm
Session Two:  6:30pm – 7:30pm

Join us for this special study session - a close up look at some of the best blooms on clothes and textiles and talking about the clothes in our collection.

Our curator has had a hunt through the stores and carefully picked out a fascinating selection of printed, woven and embroidered textiles of all kinds - all inspired by nature. We're feeling flowery because summer is a perfect time for gardening, flower shows and blooming loveliness. Why not see how people have interpreted these motifs in fabric over the years?

We'll look at some of the oldest textiles in the collection - a Coptic tunic from around 700 - right up to contemporary fashions from Top Shop. Objects will range from waistcoats, dresses, quilts, lace, aprons and more - - this is a great chance to see the range of our textile collection.

Please note that this is a study session - not a talk. We'll be a small group of 12 people, gathered around a table, talking about the clothes and exploring them close up for around 30 minutes. We will then arrange a selection of the items and have these available for anyone who wants to draw from the collection (pencils only, please) for the remaining 30 minutes. The curator will also be available for further discussion and informal study with plenty of opportunities to ask questions.

Cost: Tickets are £5 and £2.50 for students (please bring your current student ID or NUS card)

Booking is essential on Harris Eventbrite here.

Our workshops are very popular. Please let us know if you need to cancel your ticket as we often have a waiting list for these events.
