Look & Learn: Calligraphy Talks, Demonstrations and Workshops

Writing- making Your Mark

Wednesday 26 June
Join Janice McClelland (from Calligraphy Lancashire) and Jean Gray (Artist and Calligrapher) for a series of talks and demonstrations looking into the beautiful world of calligraphy.

You can even have a go at recreating these ornate styles as each talk is followed by an optional 'hands-on' workshop.

At the workshop, you will learn the skills to recreate the striking calligraphy that you have seen during the talk; it's a great chance to enhance and develop your own beautiful writing style.

Please note that we will be looking at a different style at each session.

Style: Illumination and Gilding (both traditional and modern).
We'll take a look at the history of illumination (text decorated with gold and silver) and the techniques used to create these ornate works often richly decorated with dazzling colours and detailed drawings.

Time? 6 - 8pm

In the Heritage reading Room.

Making Your Mark

This series of sessions is happening at the Harris as we host the British Library's 'Writing: Make your Mark' exhibtion.

"Follow the remarkable evolution of writing from ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs carved in stone and early printed text such as William Caxton’s edition of The Canterbury Tales, to the art of note-taking by some of history’s greatest minds, and onwards to the digital communication tools we use today."
